FAQs

These opinions can vary depending upon the specifics of the circumstances being considered.

Is there a fee for your hair loss consultation?

No. We never charge for a consultation. In fact, we feel that charging for a consultation goes against the spirit of helping you solve your hair loss problems. We want to provide you with free information and a treatment plan that gets you on the road to a full head of hair.

Is transplanted hair permanent?

Yes. Transplanted hairs have different characteristics, than hairs you lose, which allow them to thrive in the newly transplanted sites. Therefore, hair placed in balding areas will keep their native characteristics and remain permanently.

Will I get all my hair back with one procedure?

You’ve lost your hair over years or even decades. This answer depends on the extent of your hair loss and the amount of quality donor hair available. Most people have between 80-85 hair follicles per square centimeter. We can safely place approximately 25-30 hairs per sqcm. So, if you’re completely bald, then we can get you back to about 30% density in one session. If you’re thinning, then you have hair already in the area and we can add more density and it can look like a full head of hair. Many patients are very happy after one procedure. Most patients require 2-3 surgeries over 2-5 years in order to get back a full head of hair and replace what they’ve lost.

It’s important to keep in mind that a hair transplant does not prevent you from continuing to lose hair. You’ll keep the newly transplanted hair, but the other hairs will continue to fade. So, we often see patients who are very happy after one procedure and then they come back 4-5 years later needing another procedure due to continued thinning/balding.

Am I a good candidate for a hair transplant procedure?

It depends. There are many factors involved in order to determine if you are a good candidate for a hair transplant. Some of these factors are your age, the cause of your hair loss, supply vs. demand (i.e., how much you’ve lost and the quality/quantity of your donors), and your expectations.

We find that most people are good candidates for a hair transplant. However, you really need to set-up a consultation and walk through the process with our patient coordinators and Dr. Chao for a final determination.

Are the procedures painful?

A properly performed procedure should be nearly painless. After you are numb, then you shouldn’t feel anything during the procedure. There will be some slight discomfort over the 1-3 days immediately following the procedure and the doctor will prescribe medication to help alleviate your pain. We’ve had patients explain to us that after an FUE procedure it feels like a sunburn on the back of your head for a day or two. Depending upon which procedure you choose, FUE or FUT/Strip, there will be post-operative care and different timeframes to fully heal.

How long is the healing and recovery period?

There will be some redness and crusting/scabbing where the grafts were placed that gradually resolves over the first few days and is mostly unnoticeable within 8 or 10 days after the procedure. With FUT/Strip surgery, the donor area usually looks normal immediately after surgery. We will also schedule a suture removal appointment for you 10 days after surgery.

For FUE, it takes about a week for the donor area scabs to heal. Within 30 days you are nearly completely healed with most scars and scabs completely gone.

How long does it take to see results?

The newly transplanted hairs go dormant for 3-4 months. After this, new hairs will grow at a rate of about half an inch per month. The new growth is very gradual and does not all grow at the same rate. We often see small sprouts at about the 6-8 month mark, but it normally takes 12+ months to see full growth.

How much does a hair transplant procedure cost?

This is one of the most common questions we get. We are one of the most affordable and experienced clinics in the nation for the quality of results we get. Our grafts run anywhere between $3/each to $5.99/each depending on the type of procedure (FUE or FUT/Strip) and the number of grafts being placed. Typical costs run between $5,000 to $12,000+ depending on the above factors. As with most things in life, if you buy in volume then you will save money (i.e., the more grafts you do in a session, the lower the cost per graft).

We also often run promotions for specific surgery days or slow months, depending on our schedule and how busy we get. Please inquire and one of our patient coordinators can give you an accurate cost and treatment plan.

How long does the surgery take?

This depends on the number of grafts being placed and the type of procedure. Smaller procedures (<1500 grafts) will take about 4 hours. Larger cases of 2,500 – 3,500 grafts can take all day (6-8 hours). You are allowed to take breaks as you need throughout the day. We also provide you lunch and a TV to watch your favorite shows or movies (Netflix and Hulu). But most of our patients fall asleep for a good portion of the procedure.

Is financing available?

Yes. We work with two lending partners: Care Credit and The Lending Club. Both of these providers offer a variety of options including 0% interest, on approved credit. There are also other options to pay over 48-60 months at a lower monthly rate. Take a look at our financing page for more information and to apply.

Can I drive home after surgery?

We require that each patient arranges for a driver or other transportation after the procedure. This is due to the fact that you are given sedation medication during the procedure which may make it unsafe to operate a car.

Will other people notice that I had a surgery?

For a few days after the surgery, you will have some tiny scabs and other evidence of surgery. These typically subside after 5-7 days. You can conceal these with a hat or even the existing hair. If you are adding density to existing hair, then it will be very difficult for people to see unless you let them really inspect. If you are adding grafts to an area that is completely bald, then people will be able to see evidence for up to 1-2 weeks after the surgery.
